What Is Classical Music?

Classical music is a formal genre of music with roots in Europe.  Stylistically varied, classical music includes chamber music, operas, and symphonies, among other styles. Classical music can be categorized into six musical periods, each with its own distinctive style.  The Medieval or Gothic period spanned from the 9th to the 14th century.  Influenced heavily by the church, Medieval classical music was characterized by a cappella arrangements of religious music in the form of Gregorian chants, organums, and motets.  Guillaume De Machaut and Hildegard von Bingen were two of the period’s most influential composers.

Mirroring the rapid changes in arts and sciences during the 15th and 16th century, classical music evolved dramatically during the Renaissance period.  Although the church was still a dominant force, the government began to play a role in shaping classical music as secular music was created to entertain royalty.  Composers such as Josquin Des Perez, Claudio Monteverdi, and William Byrd began writing music with separate parts for different instruments such as the lute and recorder.  Motets and madrigals, musical pieces that combined text with music, were the predominant styles of classical music throughout the Renaissance period.

Famous for its ornamentation, the Baroque period lasted from 1600 until 1750.  During this time, composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederic Handel, and Johann Pachelbel composed pieces with elaborately layered melodies.  Suites, a sequence of dances in the same or similar keys, and concertos, a musical piece written for an orchestra and solo instruments, were the most popular styles of Baroque period classical music.

Shunning the decorated style of the Baroque period, the music of the Classical period was simple, straightforward, and formulaic.  From 1750 until 1820, composers like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Joseph Haydn, and Ludwig van Beethoven produced masterpieces in the form of symphonies, concertos, string quartets, and theme and variations.  These compositions regularly featured the sounds of the pianoforte and the harpsichord.

A prelude to the Modern period, the Romantic period of classical music emerged in 1820.  For the next 90 years, composers such as Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, and Peter Tchaikovsky labored over compositions with lengthy movements that enhanced the drama and emotion of classical music. The addition of modern brass and woodwind instruments to ensembles and orchestras was one of the most notable developments of the Romantic period.

The sound of Modern period classical music can best be described as eclectic.  From George Gershwin’s jazz styling to Richard Strauss’s classic operas to Phillip Glass’s minimalist sound, classical music created after 1910 encompasses a wide range of musical styles.  Developments in technology during the Modern period made it possible to use computer generated electronic sounds, forever changing the face of classical music.
